What If Behavior Isn't the Beginning of the Story?
After nearly twenty years working in corrections and several years studying Ayurveda, I find myself asking a different question about human behavior. What if behavior isn't the beginning of the story? What if the ecology surrounding a person—their relationships, stress, nourishment, environment, and mental qualities—shapes far more than we realize? This article explores the intersection of criminal justice, cognitive behavioral theory, social psychology, and Ayurveda in search of a richer understanding of what helps people find balance, vitality, and thrive.

Beyond Preventing Harm: What Conditions Help People Become Well?
We often ask whether basic needs are being met. Housing. Employment. Food. Safety. But is meeting basic needs the same as creating conditions for people to thrive? This article explores the difference between preventing harm and promoting wellbeing—and what that distinction might mean for criminal legal systems, staff wellness, and human change.

Know your nature: Support yourself while caring for others.
Have you ever felt wired but exhausted… or like your energy, focus, and mood are constantly shifting?
In Ayurveda, this isn’t random. It’s a reflection of the different energies within us and how they respond to our daily lives, the seasons, and our environment.
This article explores the three doṣas—vāta, pitta, and kapha—and how your unique constitution (prakṛti) and current imbalances (vikṛti) influence how you feel day to day.
Rather than offering another set of rules, Ayurveda invites a different question: What is my body asking for right now?
Bloating, Fatigue, and the Wisdom of Digestion
Digestive discomfort such as bloating, fatigue, or heaviness after meals is more common than many people realize. In Ayurveda, these experiences are often connected to the strength of our digestive fire, known as Agni. When digestion becomes weak or irregular, substances called Ama may form, contributing to imbalance in the body. This article explores how Ayurveda understands digestion and simple ways to support greater balance.
The Ayurvedic View of Food: Nourishment Beyond Nutrition
The ayurvedic view of food is about nourishment and the relationship we have with our food/food sources. This matters with how we digest, absorb and assimilate nutrients and emotional data.
Recoaching my 18-year-old self.
22 years after my high school state tournament, I came back to tennis — this time, as a coach. What I didn’t know then was that I’d been preparing to teach the very lesson I most needed at 18: that mindset is everything.
I call it “recoaching.”
It’s learning to be the coach we needed when we were younger — for ourselves, for others, and for the systems we work in.
The match didn’t define me.
But the mindset work that came after changed everything.
Integrating Holisitc Practices in Corrections: Ayurveda, Behavior Change and Nutrition.
The criminal legal system in the United States remains vast and complex, with interventions focused on cognitive and behavioral strategies often limited by the quality of basic needs such as food. Poor nutrition in correctional settings contributes to behavioral and mental health challenges, which may impede long-term prosocial change. This paper explores the impact of prison food on behavior and community outcomes, introduces Ayurveda as a holistic system of health and healing, and proposes an integrative framework for enhancing behavior-change interventions through individualized diet, lifestyle adjustments, and Ayurvedic practices. The framework emphasizes the mind-body connection, nutritional psychiatry, and culturally responsive interventions, highlighting potential benefits for both individuals who are incarcerated and the broader community. Practical considerations for implementation, ongoing research, and policy implications are discussed.
